Quepos is a small town on the Pacific coast, best known for the kickoff point to Manuel Antonio National Park. Manuel Antonio, the hamlet, is basically a roadway leading to the Park with hotels and restaurants on both sides, the more expensive being on the ocean side of the road. Go figure. Our hotel is quite a come down after 2 days at a 5 star. Still, the monkeys were playing around the restaurant and the iguanas were falling out of the trees to greet us…(quite the thrill to have a 3’ lizard throw itself at you from high in a tree. OK, maybe not AT me, but he landed 5’ away).
The beach, wide, long, and sandy is 50 yards away and the water is 80 something degrees. Add the fact that the jungle comes right down to the beach and you have a scene from Adventures in Paradise.
The most interesting restaurant is built around an old C-123 cargo plane, the sister ship of two that were bought with Iran-Contra money. The other was shot down over Nicaragua, with an American pilot, kicking off the whole scandal. They brought it here in 7 pieces from San Jose, the fuselage by boat because the Chiquita banana built train bridges were 10” too narrow.
Checked out the possibility of doing a waterfall rappel down here but the trip is on only 1 waterfall, a climb up and a rappel down. Not what I had in mind. Something to do next time. I think swimming and hiking in the rainforest are the activities for me here.
Starting to settle into the tropics now… sleeping when it feels good, taking a cooling swim in the morning, cold beer after a hot hike. Pura vida is nice, but I’m liking a t-shirt slogan “Soy gringo, pero no esta mi culpa” I am a gringo, but it’s not my fault.
